Fred RecommendsWeb HostingI recommend DreamHost. Over the years, I have used many different hosting companies (and still do). However, recently, I have used DreamHost exclusively for all my new sites. Why? Price. Quality. Simplicity. The price is right: $9.95 per month for UNLIMITED domains. Yes, you read that correctly. In fact, I am a self-described "test case" for the term unlimited domains. Currently, I am hosting over 1,200 domains with a single $9.95 per month account. That's twelve hundred domains. It's not a misprint. Many hosting companies charge $10 per month to host just one single domain. I've been with another host for about five years. They host two domains for me, and I pay $40 per month. The only reason I keep the domains there is that any interruption of service for those two domains would cost me a considerable amount of money. But for any new sites, I go straight to DreamHost. Click here to get all the details about DreamHost.
Domain RegistrationMy domain portfolio has grown to over 3,300 domains. I have used more domain registrars than I care to remember. Some have been good. Some have been horrible. In fact, I have just finished moving over 300 domains away from one registrar because of the poor treatment I received from them. They will never get another penny from me. I can recommend a couple registrars. My main registrar is Moniker. Their pricing is in line with most registrars and their interface makes it easy to manage large numbers of domains easy. It is easy to modify multiple domains in one step. Customer service is excellent. Moniker is a part of a larger company that is focused on the domain industry, and I have become even more convinced that I made the right decision to move all my domains to Moniker. Search for a domain at Moniker here: Another registrar I have used and trust is directNIC. directNIC has served me well. I still have a handful of domains registered through them. Their web interface is excellent. Modifying domains in bulk is very simple. Checking domain availability is quick, unlike other registrars I have used. Since I buy lots of domains, and am constantly on the hunt for new domains, I still use directNIC to check for availability, even though I no longer use them for new registrations. Their standard price for domains is $15, which is a little high these days. However, they do offer quantity discounts. You can purchase "directNIC Dollars" for as low as 72 cents, which translates to paying $10.80 per domain. To get this quantity discount you have to spend $2160 US dollars. Discounts start at just $150 directNIC dollars. Cash (non-credit card) discounts are available as well. Search for a domain from directNIC here:
Domain SellingSelling a domain name used to be difficult. Finding a buyer for a domain was tough. Now, there are several domain "exchanges" that facilitate the sale of domains. These exchanges allow anyone to list for sale a domain that they own, much like MLS does for real estate. Anyone can browse the literally millions of listed domains and make offers. The seller can then accept, counter or reject those offers. Once an offer is accepted, the exchange serves as a middleman to facilitate a "safe" transaction by accepting payment and moving the domain from the old owner to the new owner. I have used two such exchanges: 1. Sedo - This is probably the largest of all domain exchanges, and I have sold more domains here than anywhere else. [Visit Sedo] 2. Afternic - This site is growing all the time and I have sold several domains here. [Visit Afternic] |
